I was leading a new product development effort at International Power Technology to develop the Cheng Cycle Series 5, a nominally 2000 kW steam injected gas turbine based on the 1400kW Kawasaki M1A-03. A team of us, including Dr. Ramji Digumarthi, Don Hendricks, and John Gaffney visited Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) at the Osaka works to discuss the technical program.
The Jet Engine Division of Kawasaki Heavy Industries was led by the famous Dr. Yukio Ohtsuki, known as “Dr. HP (horsepower)” for his development of the company’s motorcycles. Dr. Shinichi Kajita, who was my contemporary, had the lead on combustion testing.
We took one tour around the area, including a side trip to Nara.
